L-1 visas are only issued with an effectivity or validity period of up to 3 years, but it may be renewed for a maximum of 7 years if it is an L-1A, and a maximum of 5 years if it is an L-1B. You must know that time spent under an L1 visa status will be included in the counting towards this maximum.
Unfortunately, for L-1A’s, after the expiration of the 7-year period and the employee still resides at least one complete year abroad, the period will not be stalled, and the time will begin to tick off. On the other hand, there is no time limit for those who reside intermittently in the U.S., or more specifically a total amount of six months or less per year.
